TMerchants
The Vikings were not only battlethirsty warriors and blatant thieves as their reputation would imply, they were also merchants. The achievements of the Scandinavian traders were such that they can hardly be ignored. Their trade routes criss-crossed the western world and spanned from Iceland to the north of Finland and the Mediterranean sea, as well as from the Caspian sea to the British isles and Ireland. They penetrated far into Russia and Europe by navigating the vast rivers of the continent and linked with international caravan routes to trade goods from China and Persia. The Viking merchants traded in various goods such as furs, wool, jewelry, gold, silver, weapons, pottery, cloth and slaves, and food such as fruit, fish, honey, salt, wine, spices and wheat are only a small example of their trade. Collecting hoards of silver and gold seems to have been their main objective as these were the bullion of the time. The precious metals were weighed in scales and it was therefore not uncommon for the items, both jewelry, coins and ingots to be broken up into the desired amount. The Viking traders sometimes buried these treasures for safekeeping and never returned to claim them. The silver hoards of the Viking traders have been the source of many stories and legends and have lead to many treasure hunts. Well over a thousand of them have been found consisting of various objects such as coins from Arabia and ingots, Viking age jewelry such as brooches, pendants, neck-rings, arm-rings, finger-rings, and many broken pieces.
