The magical symbols are thought to be derived from the runic writing system. The most famous magic runes are the Helm of Awe, and Signpost. The Helm of Awe is the magical symbol of protection used by early Vikings. Signpost is sometimes referred to as the "runic compass". The Vikings believed it would help prevent one from getting lost and they usually marked the symbol on the forehead. |

Viking age
From the ninth to the eleventh centuries the Vikings traveled from their homes in Scandinavia for various purposes, out across the northern hemisphere. The period is known as the Viking age and although it only spanned three centuries these travelling warrior merchants had a tremendous impact on history.
They set sail from their homes in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, parts of Finland and later Iceland and would sail great distances for glory, gold and honor. The first descriptions of these fierce warriors came from the monasteries that the Vikings raided in the last decades of the eighth century such as Lindisfarne on June 8th 793. What appeared to be a direct assault on Christendom by barbaric pagans was the cause of much alarm in the civilized west and rumors of their cruelty spread far and wide. It is precisely the increasing frequency of the Viking attacks in the 9th and 10th centuries that give the period its name.
The Vikings founded colonies in the countries where they set land that became their base of operations, home away from home. From these colonies they conquered vast lands and their influence on both the culture and language in the west is undeniable. Several reasons contributed to the gradual diminishing of the attacks and raids in the 11th century, among them were the fact that the influence of Christianity had spread to Scandinavia causing many changes to the traditional way of life, and that the Viking settlers and merchants in the various colonies had become absorbed into the local populations. Times were changing.
